Survivorship Medicine

Survivorship Medicine

Pre-operative and Post-operative

Medicine has advanced so much in the last 50 years that people are living longer with chronic diseases – even cancer.  Many of these chronic diseases play a critical role in sexual function. For example, in 1970, there were approximately 3 million cancer survivors in the United States.  By the year 2000, there were 13.7 million cancer survivors in the United States.  Amazing! The term, “5-year survival rate” is obsolete for so many cancers now.  As a result of medical breakthroughs throughout the world, people can live with cancer like a chronic disease.  Many breast cancers and prostate cancers are now considered chronic diseases.  The patient learns to live with these diseases just like living with heart disease, hypertension, or diabetes. Dr. Pam explains to both women and men that as a result of certain diseases many changes to the internal and external genitalia take place.  Likewise, medications may have been added which affect sexual function.  There are many times instances in which patients need to discuss their concerns about upcoming gynecologic or/or urological surgery.  Pre-operatively, they may want to discuss the indications for a particular surgery or just get a second opinion regarding what their physician has told them.  Sometimes, an independent physician discussing the surgery may allow them to understand the risks and side-effects more clearly.  It is all a matter of comfort.  Post-operatively, there may be changes that a patient was not expecting.  Discussing these changes and what to expect in the future is important to many patients. We want this part of your life to be as wonderful as possible. Dr. Pam understands how important your lifestyle, happiness, and intimacy are to you and your spouse, and she will do everything… to get you back to where you were.  Dr. Pam knows that one of the most important drivers of general good health and well-being includes sexual vitality.*
